Leather care for car seats - Why should I maintain them?

Even though the leather found in most cars today is a completely different type, and in some cases even synthetic leather, it still needs to be cared for. Whether it's an older car from the 1970s or a new Tesla, it's a really good idea to give your leather surfaces leather care.

The leather can become dry and fragile if it is not cared for correctly, or not cared for at all. We leave oils and other dirt from our bodies, and to remove it, gentle methods are used, but they leave them dry, and therefore need to be post-treated with leather grease.

Many even think that the leather seats should look greasy when clean. It's actually the opposite; they should be matte. So if your leather seats or surfaces look like that, they need some care.

In short - If you love your car, give its leather surfaces some love.

Leather cleaner for car

Although you can certainly use a general interior cleaner, I suggest you choose one that is specifically for cleaning leather. It is specifically formulated so that it does not harm your leather.

My personal favorite is Leather Cleaner from Shiny Garage, and if that's not enough to clean your leather, it's also available in a professional variant, which is stronger. Simply spray it on a leather brush, and gently scrub the leather, then wipe off with a microfiber cloth.

Easily maintain leather interior

Once your leather interior has been cleaned, it is actually very easy to maintain. You don't have to wait 6 months to 1 year before cleaning your leather interior again, maintain it regularly, and you will avoid major leather cleaning.

This also means that dirt is removed more often, so they remain cleaner and thus get better air.

Simply use a Leather Quick Detailer; it both cleans and cares for the leather. Spray on a microfiber cloth, or directly on the leather surface, and wipe. It's especially a favorite here at home, where I myself love leather over fabric.

Leather grease or synthetic leather care?

Whether you prefer traditional leather grease or modern synthetic leather care products, you have come to the right place, and there is no wrong answer.

Newer types of leather are post-treated with a so-called ''top coat'', somewhat like a car's paint is treated with clear coat to protect the color, so it's not actually the leather itself that we are working directly on.

In cases with a top coat, i.e., newer leather, it doesn't matter whether you choose one or the other; they will both work quite well.

However, if you have a car with so-called ''old-fashioned leather'', where you are working directly with the leather, I would always recommend using leather grease. In my opinion, it will give you the best results.
